Questions & Tax Rules
Good to know
How AI extraction, Canadian brokers, T5008 slips, and CRA Adjusted Cost Base rules work.
How does SmartACB use AI? Does AI calculate my tax numbers?
AI only handles the tedious document work: reading brokerage PDF statements, screenshots, and US RSU/ESPP vest reports, auto-mapping custom CSV columns, flagging unusual rows for review, and letting you batch-edit transactions in plain English. Every dollar of your Adjusted Cost Base (ACB), Bank of Canada USD/CAD FX conversion, superficial-loss adjustment, and Schedule 3 capital gain is calculated by 100% deterministic, rule-based code — AI never guesses or calculates your tax math.
Which Canadian and US brokers work?
All of them. Drop in a CSV, monthly PDF statement, trade confirmation, or screenshot from Wealthsimple, Questrade, Interactive Brokers (IBKR), TD Direct Investing, RBC Direct Investing, BMO InvestorLine, CIBC Investor's Edge, National Bank Direct Brokerage, Scotia iTRADE, Qtrade, or US equity award platforms like Morgan Stanley StockPlan Connect, Charles Schwab, Fidelity, and E*TRADE. Common layouts are recognised instantly and AI extracts the rest so you can verify every row before calculating.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
Standard CSV files in the calculator on this page run right in your browser. When AI maps an unfamiliar CSV header, reads a PDF statement or screenshot, or applies a plain-English instruction, only the necessary document or rows are processed by the AI and never stored as files. When you create a free account and save a portfolio, your ledger is stored in a database hosted in Canada.
What is Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) and why can't I just use my T5008 slip?
Your Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) is the weighted-average cost of all shares you hold of an identical security across all your non-registered accounts, including trading commissions, reinvested dividends, and ETF Return of Capital (ROC) adjustments. Broker T5008 slips frequently leave Box 20 (cost/book value) blank, fail to convert USD trades at the settlement-date Bank of Canada exchange rate, or miss identical shares held at another brokerage. The CRA requires you to track and report your true ACB on Schedule 3.
How are US-dollar trades, RSUs, and ESPP shares handled?
Each USD buy, sell, RSU vest, or ESPP purchase is converted to Canadian dollars using the official Bank of Canada daily exchange rate for its settlement date (or trade date, your choice), fetched automatically. This properly captures foreign-exchange gains and losses even when the USD stock price doesn't move.
Does SmartACB handle the CRA superficial loss rule and ETF Return of Capital (ROC)?
Yes. SmartACB automatically detects superficial losses within the 61-day window (30 days before to 30 days after a sale at a loss when identical shares are acquired and still held), denies the loss as required by the Income Tax Act, and adds the denied loss back to the ACB of your remaining shares. It also supports Return of Capital (ROC), phantom distributions, and stock splits.
What about my TFSA, RRSP, and FHSA?
Trades inside registered accounts (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, RESP) do not trigger taxable capital gains or losses, so SmartACB automatically excludes them from your Schedule 3 totals and notes the reason clearly.
